The client approached us with a small rough slab of English Walnut that was quite badly twisted and bowed. We were able to salvage enough material to build this box, albeit with thinner than typical stock. All material is just 1/4″ thick.

For a touch of class, we decided to dress up the mitered corners with Bolivian Rosewood inlays. Likewise, we applied a series of Rosewood splines across the miters.

The hinge is completely made of wood also. As a result of just enough friction between the hinge barrels, it somewhat mimics a soft-close mechanism, but is very easy to open and close.

Our preferred finish for virtually all projects is Odie’s Oil. As such, it should come as no surprise that we used it here. We chose to apply the finish to every non-glued surface, both inside and out. In many cases, this required a clever order-of-operations to pre-finish assemblies before final glue up.
